The Ludovico company, which produces and bottles red, rosé and white wine, takes care of approximately one hectare of property with Montepulciano wine grapes and half a hectare rented from which it also began producing white wine (Malvasia, Trebbiano and Pecorino from vineyards) in 2018. Old ones were partly donated by local farmers who could no longer work them). The annual production is around 110 quintals of grapes, this allows us to take care of the vine and the transformation in the cellar in detail, trying to keep the characteristics of the grapes and the vintage intact.
Founded in 1982 at the behest of my father Enzo Ludovico, the company aims to maintain and promote the territory and a small family tradition. With small steps and with great passion, a production reality has been built that always keeps two aspects alive: the knowledge and conservation of the ancient peasant tradition and the choice to reduce manipulation in the cellar to a minimum to offer an essential product, the result of simple fermentation of grapes.
Historical and geographical notes on the area:
The Ludovico agricultural company is located in Vittorito, in the province of L’Aquila, in the Peligna Valley. It is a place known for the production of Montepulciano wine and deservedly included among the Cities of Wine, Vittorito has numerous small wine-growing realities. Ours is one of these.
Environmental conditions of the place and production area:
The company is located in the Peligna Valley, the hilly of the province of L’Aquila. The area of origin of Abruzzo viticulture, the Peligna Valley boasts a particular climate given its proximity to the Gran Sasso D’Italia and the Maiella and Morrone mountains. The position of the vineyards isolates them from the hot winds of the coastal hills and characterizes a cold climate and strong temperature variations. In the vineyards, exposed to the east, short pruning and cultivation in rows are adopted. The grape harvest is done by hand. In the cellar the wine does not undergo pasteurization and is not filtered.
My principles and ideals as a producer:
Carrying on a small business like this suits perfectly into the entire commercial wine landscape and encourages us to always maintain a relationship of trust with the consumer, guaranteeing the quality of the product from cultivation to bottling. Wine production is influenced by a work ethic of daily action. The natural product reflects the desire to build a solid network of contacts with the consumers of our wine.
I learned this in years spent doing theatre and I bring it back to the vineyard… the richness lies in the interstices, in the details, in the content, not in the form and quantity (indeed, increasing the latter, in inversely proportional form, reduces the former! )
